A schematic depiction of an O/W (oil-in-water) microemulsion micelle as a spherical supramolecular assembly. Amphiphilic surfactant molecules are shown with hydrophilic head groups (light circles) oriented outward into the aqueous phase and hydrophobic tails (wavy orange chains) directed inward to a central oil-rich core. In the biological and chemical hierarchy, individual surfactant molecules self-assemble into a micelle, which disperses within a continuous water phase of a colloidal system. Relevant to colloid and interface science, physical chemistry, and pharmaceutics, such micelles solubilize hydrophobic solutes and can enable drug delivery by increasing apparent aqueous solubility and transport.
