This illustration depicts the microscopic structure of compact bone, showcasing osteons which are cylindrical structures. Each osteon contains a central canal, also known as a Haversian canal, surrounded by concentric layers of calcified matrix called lamellae. Osteocytes, the bone cells, are located in small spaces called lacunae between the lamellae and are interconnected by tiny channels known as canaliculi. The bone tissue appears in shades of beige and light orange.
