A stylized mononuclear hematopoietic precursor with a large nucleus and pale cytoplasm. Within the skeletal system hierarchy, this cell resides in the bone marrow niche and differentiates into multinucleated osteoclasts on bone surfaces. In cell biology and histology, it represents an osteoclast progenitor (OCP) of the monocyte/macrophage lineage. Functionally, it responds to M-CSF (macrophage colony-stimulating factor) and RANKL (receptor activator of NF-κB ligand) to proliferate and fuse, enabling bone resorption during skeletal remodeling.
