A simplified illustration of a mononuclear osteoclast precursor cell with cytoplasm enclosed by a plasma membrane. In cell biology and histology, this hematopoietic-derived cell resides within bone marrow and at the bone surface, representing a cell-level component within bone tissue of the skeletal system. Functionally, it differentiates and fuses to form multinucleated osteoclasts that resorb mineralized matrix, a process regulated by RANKL (receptor activator of nuclear factor kappa-B ligand) and M-CSF (macrophage colony-stimulating factor), with increasing TRAP (tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase) activity.
