A neuroanatomical schematic depicts the human visual pathway on the ventral surface of the brain. Retinal ganglion cell axons form the optic nerves (cranial nerve II, CN II) from each eye, converge at the optic chiasm where nasal hemiretinal fibers decussate, and continue as optic tracts toward the lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN) before projecting to the occipital cortex. This hierarchy spans neurons within a cranial nerve to central pathways in the diencephalon, relevant to neuroanatomy and visual physiology, enabling contralateral visual field representation and binocular vision in Homo sapiens (human).
