A schematic histology image depicts the olfactory mucosa as a pseudostratified neuroepithelium in the superior nasal cavity. Sustentacular supporting cells, basal stem cells, and bipolar ORNs (olfactory receptor neurons) extend dendritic cilia into the mucus layer while their axons bundle in the lamina propria. Bowman's (olfactory) glands and ducts secrete serous fluid that bathes the cilia. Below the epithelium, olfactory nerve fascicles course through connective tissue toward the olfactory bulb, illustrating neuroanatomy and sensory physiology of odor transduction.
