Normal Epidermis. A didactic histology-style diagram shows layered skin with a keratinized epithelium overlying connective tissue and subcutaneous fat. It depicts the epidermis (stratified squamous keratinized epithelium) forming rete ridges at the DEJ (dermoepidermal junction) above the dermis, with adipocytes composing the hypodermis beneath. Keratinocytes in the basal layer line the undulating interface, supporting renewal. In anatomical and dermatologic histology, this tissue belongs to the integumentary system and covers the body surface, providing a barrier against water loss, mechanical stress, and pathogens.
