At the biological hierarchy level, it is a protein complex assembled within the cytoplasm of an innate immune cell. The complex includes the NLRP3 sensor (NLR family pyrin domain–containing 3; NLRP3), the adaptor ASC (apoptosis‑associated speck‑like protein containing a caspase recruitment domain; ASC), and the effector pro‑caspase‑1 (CASP1). Oligomerization activates CASP1 to mature IL‑1β and IL‑18 and induce pyroptosis, relevant to immunology, cell biology, and pathology.
