In developmental anatomy and embryology, this embryonic primordium is a tubular neuroepithelium derived from dorsal ectoderm along the midline of the early embryo. It functions as the precursor of the central nervous system (CNS), giving rise to the brain and spinal cord and enclosing the neural canal that becomes the ventricular system.
