A schematic depicts a cylindrical bundle of repeating sarcomeres within a striated skeletal muscle fiber. The longitudinal view shows stacked contractile units, and the end-on section shows interdigitating thick myosin and thin actin filaments. In the biological hierarchy, it is an organelle within a cell (myocyte) of skeletal muscle tissue. In anatomy and physiology, it enables contraction via the sliding-filament mechanism regulated by Ca2+ (calcium ion) and powered by ATP (adenosine triphosphate). The structure resides in the sarcoplasm of striated muscle.
