In the biological hierarchy, the bacterium infects Schwann cells in peripheral nerves and macrophages in the dermis, affecting the integumentary and peripheral nervous systems. In infectious disease pathology, M. leprae (Mycobacterium leprae) is an obligate intracellular pathogen causing leprosy with neuropathy and cutaneous lesions.
