In muscle physiology and cell biology, this protein complex forms the thick filament of the sarcomere A band in striated muscle fibers, where it binds actin and hydrolyzes ATP via ATPase (adenosine triphosphatase) activity to produce contraction. Hierarchically, myosin molecules assemble into a thick filament within a myofibril of muscle tissue.
