Stylized illustration of a unipennate skeletal muscle with a central tendon (aponeurosis) bordered by obliquely oriented muscle fibers resembling a feather. In anatomy and physiology, this tissue represents skeletal muscle within the musculoskeletal system. The hierarchical organization shows myofibers grouped into fascicles that assemble into the whole muscle, which transmits contractile force to the tendon. This pennate architecture increases physiological cross-sectional area and maximal force generation at the expense of shortening distance and speed.
