A histologic-style illustration depicts smooth muscle tissue with parallel layers of fusiform smooth muscle cells (SMCs) featuring single, centrally located nuclei and lacking cross-striations. In biological hierarchy, it shows individual SMCs organized into smooth muscle tissue within the muscular system, a subject of anatomy, histology, and physiology. Functionally, this tissue generates involuntary contractions through actin–myosin sliding to propel luminal contents and regulate vessel diameter. It is typically found in the walls of hollow visceral organs and blood vessels.
