A schematic shows surface-mediated molecular self-assembly, with discrete polycyclic organic molecules organizing into a hexagonal network that extends across a planar substrate. At the structural hierarchy level, individual molecules form a supramolecular sheet/SAM (self-assembled monolayer) that becomes a 2D (two-dimensional) lattice at the solid–vacuum interface. In materials chemistry and surface science, such assembly produces ordered monolayers and functional coatings, enabling nanoscale patterning and electronic interfaces.
