Within the nucleus, replicated chromosomes containing DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) appear as X-shaped sister chromatids, nested hierarchically as chromosomes within a nucleus inside a cell. Two centrosomes act as microtubule-organizing centers (MTOCs) with nascent spindle asters in the surrounding cytoplasm. In cell biology and genetics, this stage initiates spindle assembly and prepares homologous chromosomes for pairing, enabling meiotic division that halves the genome for gametogenesis.
