Midgut volvulus. Diagram of the small intestine twisted around its mesenteric axis, creating closed-loop obstruction. In human anatomy and gastroenterology, the midgut (jejunum and ileum) is an organ-level component of the GI (gastrointestinal) system within the abdominal cavity, shown relative to the stomach and colon. The small intestine normally performs enzymatic digestion and nutrient absorption, while the large intestine reabsorbs water; torsion compromises perfusion and transit, risking ischemia and obstruction.
