A stylized mid-modiolar section of the cochlea shows the spiral turns of the inner ear within the bony labyrinth. Large perilymphatic chambers (scala vestibuli and scala tympani) flank the endolymphatic cochlear duct housing the organ of Corti. A central modiolus contains the spiral ganglion and bundled cochlear nerve fibers that project to CN VIII (eighth cranial nerve). Reissner’s and basilar membranes delimit the cochlear duct, enabling mechanoelectrical transduction for hearing within otologic anatomy of the temporal bone.
