Microfilaments: A stylized diagram of a helical actin filament composed of repeating subunits. This cytoskeletal protein polymer (F-actin, filamentous actin) assembles from G-actin (globular actin) monomers, representing a hierarchy of protein within the cytoskeleton of a eukaryotic cell. In cell biology and biochemistry, microfilaments provide mechanical support, drive cell motility and cytokinesis, and interact with myosin for contraction. They are located in the cytoplasm, particularly within the cell cortex just beneath the plasma membrane.
