This schematic depicts a spherical micelle, a supramolecular assembly of amphiphilic surfactant molecules in aqueous solution. Hydrophilic head groups (blue) orient outward toward water, while hydrophobic hydrocarbon tails (red) pack inward to form a nonpolar core. In the hierarchy of molecular organization, individual surfactant molecules self-assemble into a colloidal aggregate. In colloid chemistry and biochemistry, micelles enable solubilization and transport of hydrophobic compounds and underlie detergent action. Formation occurs above the critical micelle concentration (CMC).
