A schematic depiction of an encysted metacercaria of Opisthorchis viverrini (O. viverrini), the Southeast Asian liver fluke. The rounded cyst has a thick wall surrounding the larval trematode and its internal structures. In parasitology and microbiology, this larval stage is the infective form of a helminth (phylum Platyhelminthes) in the trematode life cycle, enabling transmission to definitive mammalian hosts and initiation of opisthorchiasis.
