A schematic illustrates a biological membrane composed of a phospholipid (PL) bilayer. Amphipathic PL molecules are arranged with hydrophilic head groups oriented toward the aqueous exterior and interior and hydrophobic fatty acyl tails forming the nonpolar core. In cell biology and biochemistry, this membrane-type structure constitutes the cell membrane (CM) at the boundary of the cytoplasm, enabling compartmentalization and selective permeability in both prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells.
