Mango open. A longitudinal section of a drupe shows a large ovate stone (lignified endocarp) centered within orange mesocarp and a narrow epicarp. In the biological hierarchy, the seed lies inside the endocarp, which is enclosed by the pericarp of the fruit, a reproductive organ of an angiosperm tree. This image relates to botany and plant anatomy, with relevance to horticulture and food science. Functionally, the fleshy mesocarp enables animal-mediated seed dispersal and serves as edible tissue.
