A simplified schematic depicts a gap junction channel (GJC) formed by two docking connexons (hemichannels) across adjacent plasma membranes. Each connexon is a hexamer of connexin (Cx) proteins, creating an intercellular pore that mediates direct cell-to-cell communication in mammals (class Mammalia). In the hierarchy, this membrane protein complex resides within the cell membrane of epithelial or cardiac tissue. In cell biology and physiology, it enables electrical and metabolic coupling by permitting diffusion of ions and small second messengers (e.g., cAMP, IP3) between neighboring cells.
