Schematic of a human hepatocyte in the pre-erythrocytic (exoerythrocytic) liver stage of Plasmodium infection. The cell is filled with a maturing hepatic schizont containing numerous oval merozoites enclosed within a parasitophorous vacuole. The hepatocyte background is pink, while the merozoites are brown–yellow with darker centers, depicting the dense packing prior to hepatic schizont rupture and release of merozoites into the bloodstream.
