A stylized diagram depicts two crescent-shaped sexual-stage cells of the malaria parasite. These are gametocytes, a protozoan cell type of Plasmodium species (malaria parasite) that develop within host red blood cells (RBCs) during the blood stage. In parasitology and microbiology, gametocytes enable transmission by differentiating into gametes in the Anopheles mosquito midgut after a blood meal. The illustration shows the curved, banana-like morphology typical of mature forms, representing a cell-level structure within hematologic tissue of a vertebrate host.
