A stylized depiction of a lysosome, a membrane-bound organelle within the cytoplasm of a eukaryotic cell. In cell biology and histology, it represents a subcellular compartment responsible for intracellular digestion and turnover of macromolecules during endocytosis and autophagy. The vesicle contains acid hydrolases (proteases, lipases, and nucleases) active in an acidic lumen maintained by the vacuolar H+-ATPase (V-ATPase). Hierarchically, it is an organelle within the cell, supporting cellular homeostasis by degrading cargo and recycling biomolecules.
