A schematic of an intrahepatic sinusoid illustrates portal hypertension with narrowed segments and distorted luminal caliber. The vascular channel is lined by liver sinusoidal endothelial cells (LSEC) and bordered by hepatocyte plates, separated by the perisinusoidal space of Disse. Activated hepatic stellate cells (HSC) deposit extracellular matrix (ECM), depicted as yellow fibrous material, while Kupffer cells attach to the endothelium. In hepatology and vascular pathology, this tissue-level change increases intrahepatic vascular resistance and impairs portal venous perfusion and exchange across the sinusoidal wall.
