A schematic cross-section of the crystalline lens depicts a central yellow nucleus surrounded by concentric cortical lamellae, enclosed by the lens capsule, a specialized ECM (extracellular matrix), with a single-layer anterior epithelium at the periphery. In ocular anatomy and histology, this transparent organ of the visual system contains elongated lens fibers within the cortex. The structure resides in the anterior segment, posterior to the iris and anterior to the vitreous body, enabling refraction and accommodation.
