Illustration of the amastigote life‑cycle stage of Leishmania spp., a unicellular protozoan (Kinetoplastida) shown as an oval cell with a spherical nucleus and a disk-shaped kinetoplast containing kDNA (kinetoplast DNA) and a short internal flagellum. In biological hierarchy, this parasite resides intracellularly within a macrophage’s parasitophorous vacuole (PV) in the mammalian host. In parasitology and pathology, the amastigote replicates by binary fission and drives leishmaniasis, affecting the skin and visceral reticuloendothelial tissues of Homo sapiens (human) and other mammals.
