A simplified schematic depicts an immunoglobulin light chain (IgL), a polypeptide component of an antibody (Ig). As part of antibody quaternary structure, the light chain pairs with a heavy chain to form the antigen-binding fragment (Fab) that mediates adaptive immune recognition. In immunology and protein biochemistry, this chain is synthesized by B lymphocytes and exists in secreted antibodies within blood and mucosal secretions or incorporated into the B cell receptor (BCR) on the plasma membrane.
