A cross-sectional schematic shows the external coverings of a Homo sapiens (human) kidney, an organ of the urinary system. The renal parenchyma is enveloped by a thin fibrous renal capsule, surrounded by perirenal (perinephric) adipose tissue, which is bounded by the renal fascia (Gerota fascia) and an outer layer of pararenal fat adjacent to the posterior body wall. In human anatomy and urology, these connective tissue layers stabilize, protect, and cushion the retroperitoneal kidney during respiration and bodily movement.
