A simplified schematic shows a single epidermal keratinocyte with a centrally placed nucleus. In biological hierarchy, it is a cell within the stratified squamous epithelium of the skin, part of the integumentary system. In histology, dermatology, and cell biology, keratinocytes are recognized for producing keratin (KRT) proteins and forming intermediate filament (IF) networks that create the cornified barrier. Functionally, this epithelial cell supports mechanical resilience, limits transepidermal water loss, and protects the epidermis against ultraviolet (UV) radiation and pathogens.
