A stylized depiction of a homologous pair of autosomal chromosomes with alternating cytogenetic bands, as seen in a eukaryotic karyotype. In the biological hierarchy, chromosomes are DNA–protein complexes within the nucleus of a dividing cell. In cytogenetics and genetics, such banding (G-banding, Giemsa-banding) aids identification of chromosomal number and structure.
