A simplified cytogenetic illustration shows the homologous pair of human (Homo sapiens) chromosome 21 with a light–dark banding pattern, representing condensed chromatin during metaphase in the cell nucleus. In the biological hierarchy, each chromosome is a DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid)–protein complex within a cell, forming part of the human genome. The entity is an autosomal chromosome.
