A stylized cytogenetic illustration shows two banded chromosomes arranged as a homologous pair in a karyotype. Each rod-like element displays alternating light and dark bands consistent with G-banding (Giemsa banding) of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid). In biological hierarchy, these chromosomes are nuclear structures within a eukaryotic cell and components of a genome. In cytogenetics and cell biology, such karyograms are used to assess ploidy, identify structural rearrangements, and diagnose chromosomal abnormalities.
