A simplified ideogram depicts a homologous pair of chromosome 16 with alternating light and dark bands characteristic of G-banding (Giemsa banding). In cytogenetics, this autosome is shown at the chromosomal level within the eukaryotic cell nucleus. The banding pattern provides positional landmarks for karyotype analysis, enabling detection of structural variants such as deletions, duplications, inversions, and translocations. Hierarchically, the chromosome lies above individual genes and below the genome as a whole.
