A simplified cytogenetic illustration shows a homologous pair of chromosome 15 with alternating G-bands. Each element represents a condensed chromosome, a DNA–protein complex (DNA: deoxyribonucleic acid) located in the nucleus of a eukaryotic cell. The banding pattern reflects G-banding (Giemsa banding) used in cytogenetics and genetics to generate a karyotype for detecting aneuploidy or structural rearrangements such as deletions or translocations. Hierarchically, the chromosome is part of the genome within the cell nucleus.
