At the apical region, tight junctions (TJ; zonula occludens) form a continuous seal, followed basally by adherens junctions (AJ; zonula adherens) linked to cortical actin filaments, and desmosomes (DSM; macula adherens) connected to intermediate filaments. In anatomy and cell biology, these junctions maintain epithelial polarity, adhesion, and barrier function within epithelial tissue, enabling paracellular permeability control and mechanical integrity.
