A stylized histologic view depicts a pancreatic islet: a spherical cluster of endocrine tissue embedded within exocrine pancreas and traversed by a dense capillary network. In anatomy and physiology, this micro-organ contains β-cells (beta cells), α-cells (alpha cells), and δ-cells (delta cells) that secrete insulin, glucagon, and somatostatin, respectively, to regulate glucose homeostasis. Hierarchically, individual hormone-producing cells form the islet within the pancreas, a component of the endocrine system.
