A rope-like cytoskeletal polymer composed of staggered antiparallel tetramers assembled from coiled-coil dimers, forming a 10 nm intermediate filament (IF). In cell biology and structural biochemistry, this protein filament resides within the cytoplasm of eukaryotic cells as part of the cytoskeleton, providing tensile strength and mechanical stability.
