A schematic rendering of an intermediate filament (IF), a 10-nm cytoskeletal protein polymer in eukaryotic cells. The illustration shows rope-like bundles formed as coiled-coil dimers assemble into antiparallel tetramers, which laterally associate into protofilaments that pack together to produce the mature filament. In cell biology and molecular biology, IFs function as tensile elements that stabilize cell shape, anchor organelles, and reinforce cell–cell and cell–matrix junctions within the cytoplasm.
