A simplified schematic shows a heterodimeric integrin receptor embedded in the plasma membrane (PM), with two differently colored subunits displaying globular extracellular heads, elongated stalks, single-pass transmembrane segments, and short cytoplasmic tails. In cell biology and biochemistry, this membrane protein mediates cell–extracellular matrix (ECM) adhesion and bidirectional signaling, enabling mechanotransduction, migration, and survival. Hierarchically, it is a receptor protein within the PM of a cell that contributes to tissue organization and structural integrity.
