Integrin transmembrane receptors. A stylized schematic depicts heterodimeric cell-adhesion proteins spanning the plasma membrane and linking the extracellular matrix to the cytoskeleton. In cell biology and biochemistry, this protein complex (alpha/beta subunits) functions as a receptor mediating adhesion to ECM (extracellular matrix), mechanotransduction, and outside-in/inside-out signaling via FAK (focal adhesion kinase). Hierarchically, it represents a membrane protein within a eukaryotic cell that forms focal adhesions within tissues. The site is the plasma membrane at cell–matrix interfaces; species are not specified.
