A schematic representation of the ionic lattice of hydroxyapatite (HAp; Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2) with repeating clusters indicating phosphate groups and interstitial ions arranged in a crystalline network. In biomineralization, biochemistry, and anatomy, this inorganic mineral forms nanocrystals embedded in the extracellular matrix of bone tissue, an organ component of the vertebrate skeletal system, and constitutes tooth enamel. Functionally it confers hardness and compressive strength and serves as a calcium–phosphate reservoir, enabling skeletal integrity and widely used in orthopedic and dental biomaterials.
