In histology and hepatology, this cell occupies the perisinusoidal space (space of Disse) of the hepatic lobule and modulates extracellular matrix turnover. Quiescent HSCs store vitamin A, whereas activated HSCs become myofibroblast-like cells that synthesize collagen and drive hepatic fibrosis.
