This cell (HSC, hepatic stellate cell) is a mesenchymal cell type located in the perisinusoidal space of Disse within liver parenchyma, part of the digestive system. In histology and hepatology, HSCs store retinoids (vitamin A) in lipid droplets and regulate extracellular matrix synthesis; in pathology and physiology they activate to myofibroblasts during liver injury, driving fibrogenesis and remodeling.
