A simplified schematic depicts a retinal horizontal cell (HC) with a central soma containing a nucleus and long, laterally spreading dendritic processes. This neuron is an interneuron within the retina, part of the central nervous system (CNS), typically located in the outer plexiform layer (OPL). In neuroanatomy and neurophysiology, horizontal cells integrate photoreceptor inputs and mediate lateral inhibition, enabling contrast enhancement and spatial averaging. Hierarchically, it represents a neural cell within ocular sensory tissue.
