A schematic histologic section of a palatine tonsil shows a mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) organ in the oropharynx. Stratified squamous epithelium (pink) invaginates to form deep tonsillar crypts, while the parenchyma (purple) contains numerous lymphoid follicles with pale germinal centers. Thin connective tissue septa suggest a partial capsule. In the hierarchy, follicles reside within the tonsil, an organ of the lymphatic system. Functionally, this tissue mediates mucosal immunity via antigen sampling and B-cell activation leading to immunoglobulin A (IgA) production.
