High gradient severe aortic stenosis. Cutaway diagram of the human heart depicts a calcified, narrowed aortic valve limiting ejection from the left ventricle into the ascending aorta. In cardiology and cardiac pathology, the aortic valve (AV) is an anatomical structure within the heart organ of the cardiovascular system, located at the left ventricular outflow tract/aortic root. The lesion produces a large transvalvular pressure gradient characteristic of AS (aortic stenosis). Normally the AV enables unidirectional flow; obstruction reduces forward flow from the LV (left ventricle) in Homo sapiens.
